Grey’s Anatomy - Great Expectations (spoiler)

This episode had several major events. The ending was very surprising. The theme of this episode was too not have great expectations. All the surgeons expected to be chief and Addison expected that Alex liked her back. This episode also dealt with not taking life for granted. Izzie told George that life is short and if he loves Callie than he should be with her. Julian, who had cervical cancer, had to choose between returning to her family and Amish community or to stay faithful to her Best Friend. In the end her friend told her it is important to be with her family and die Amish. The major shockers at the end of the episode were the two proposals. Burke proposed to Christina after finally talking. George proposed to Callie after realizing that she makes him happy.

Grey's Anatomy

Grey’s Anatomy - Six Days - Part 2

This was a very sad episode because usually you see strangers going through hard times. In this episode you feel George’s pain as he slowly realizes his dad is going to die. One of my favorite scenes was when George was standing outside his dads hospital room with his mom, brothers and Callie. Someone lets out some gas and everyone starts laughing. George and Callie grab eachothers hands while they are laughing which is the focus of the scene. That was a great ice breaker for George and Callie.
I don’t know how I feel about Alex and Addison. They are obviously about to embark on some sort of relationship.
I thought it was great that Izzie said that could be both a surgeon and a human at the same time. The Nazi is always riding her about being too emotional and Izzie never stops get connected with the patiants. I thin Izzie is interesting because she inherited all that money and still loves working as a surgeon. It is something far more important than money to her.

Grey's Anatomy

The Pursuit Of Happyness (2007) Review

The Pursuit Of Happyness was an emotional rollercoaster. Generally people go to the movies to get away from reality. This film was a cold hard dose of reality. Many people can relate to this movie because many people struggle like it’s main character Chris Gardner. The film is very inspirational, but it makes you fight for it. You must endure many hardships in the movie until you get to experiance the climax. Will Smith and Jaden Smith worked amazingly together. It is the first time I have ever seen a father/son acting duo who played father/son in a movie. Will Smith should be recognized for his acting in the movie.
Watching this film made me wonder about the thousands of people who are or have been stuck in the same situation as Chris Gardner and have not made it. The millions of people who are victims of poverty. A memorable scene that stood out to me in the film was when a sports car filled with young wealthy people speed by a line of hundreds of homeless people waiting in line for shelter. This film was set in 1981 but America is still like that today. This movie gets you thinking about things like this which is what I really liked about it.

Frilled Shark

Frilled Shark

Did you see this Frilled Shark video yet? Looks at it’s gills and shape, it is pretty amazing. I am glad to see something out of the ordinary. They found this frilled shark in Japan. After they captured it, the shark died.

John Kerry Is Not Running For President In 2008

He is planning on staying in the senate though. Both the republicans and democrats have a substanial amount of people running for president in 2008. Nine democrats are already planning to run for president. These include Hilary Clinton, Barack Obama, John Edwards, Chris Dodd and Dennis Kucinich. For the republicans Tommy Thompson, John McCain, Mitt Romney, Rudy Giuliani, Jim Gilmore and Sam Brownback. We still have a year to see who else wants to run for president. We all might as well give it a shot. Personally I would like to see Arnold vs. Hilary on Pay Per View.

Controversial Dakota Fanning Rape Scene

Dakota Fanning has caused controversy by being nude in a rape scene in her recently released film ‘Hounddog’. She is 12 years old and many people think she is too young to be doing adult content like this in movies. Defenders of the movie say it is simply art and Dakota and her family agreed upon the rape scene. For me it’s really hard to draw a line here. I personally feel that her talent and maturity gives justice to the film’s scene. I have seen her in many films and know how good of an actress she is. This reminds of Jake Gyllenhall and Heath Ledger starring in Brokeback mountain. Neither of them are gay, but they are good enough actors to play gay men. Dakota Fanning is not a porn star but she still might be a little young to be doing these kind of roles. It will either be good or bad for her career. I don’t think I will see this film because it already sound like a feel bad movie.

Mainstream Media Don’t Like Christians

It is widely known that Christians donate more money to charity than any other group including secular progressives and large left wing media groups. Or is it? Many liberal media groups jump to conclusions about relegion and Christianity and downplay it when they write or talk about. It is easy to not like something you know nothing about. Movie reviews at the Washington Post and New York Times about Christian movies usually always seem to come back negative. These mainstream figures are generally undeducated about Christianity. It’s uneducated secularism.

Secular Progressives In Vermont

After watching Bill O’Reilly yesterday about Andrew James, the man who pleaded guilty for molesting a 4 year old boy and got probation I am pretty disappointed. What disappointed me even more was how the big figures in the Vermont print and radio media reacted poorly to Bill O’Reilly telling the truth. The secular progressives in Vermont should re-vamp their ways if they would rather make fun of Bill O’Reilly than confront the issue of Andrew James and sex offenders in their state. Vermont has always been a pretty traditional place until recently. Many highstanding people in print and radio media lack values. O’Reilly called Gov. James Douglas “a coward” who was “hiding under his desk”, and I think he is absolutely right. The rate of sexual crimes in the state of Vermont is rising.

Summit County Colorado Suffering From Pine Beetles

If you drive through Summit County Colorado you might notice something strange about the trees. Major towns like Breckenridge, Keystone, Copper, Frisco, Dillon and Silverthorne are suffering from pine beetles. Many trees are being killed and cut down. The trees are easy to notice when they have pine beetle. The trees have red and yellow needles. Many people have infested trees on their properties. Many people find the best way to get rid of the pine beetles is to chip away any areas that look infested. People are scared about what the pine beetles might do to the trees in this area and their effect on the ecosystem. A few animals do benefit from the areas of cleared trees. This is because more sunlight gives nutrients to the brush and soil. Animals like the snowshoe hare, white-crowned sparrow, mule deer, juncos and elk may benefit from the pine beetles. The pine beetles are still causing many problems to other animals that thrive in dense forest. One animal hepling kill the pine beetles is the woodpecker, which feeds on pine beetles.

Al Gore’s Documentary Nominated for an Oscar

The probabity that his documentary ‘An Inconvient Truth’ about global warming will win is very likely. Many people involved in the academy awards are left leaning. I would like to see a conservative documentary make it to the oscars. I would like to see a film about the process of abortion or why having children has become a lifestyle choice rather than a lifetime responsibility.

State of the Union

I thought Bush did very well at the State of the Union. A recent poll said %78 of Americans agreed with what he said. I am sure the left will not like it very much and criticize both his Iraq and Health plans.

The Tree Outside

This will compare the differences in how the Italians, Ionians and Pluralists thought.

A Tree:

Italian - The tree is apart of one system. The tree is unified with everything that is not the tree.

Ionian - The tree has bark and the tree can be felt.

Pluarlist
- The tree is made of particles that intervene with each other to make up the tree

What distingues the pre-socratics from their forebears?

The pre-socratics took on bigger questions having to deal with multiplicity and diversity.

Nietzche and the Pre-Socratics

There are three qualities that Nietzche sees as "serious" about the presocratics.

1. The proposition does enunciate something about the origin of things.
2. The theorized with figure and fable.
3. it is contained in the Chrysalis State. Everything is one.

They are good at explaining that All is one metaphysically. They are rational and do it without making up stuff.

Copleston & the Pre-Socratics

Why did Copleston believe that the Pre-Socratics deserve a place in the history of philosphy?

-Their formulas and problem solving techniques
-The roles as cosmologists and coming up with theories
-Their importance for the subsequens philsophies of Plato & Aristotle

What is the ultimate reality?

How do we explain diversity? What are the conditions for unity.

-Which all things consist
-Which all things come to be
-Which they are resolved (where they go)

Saturday, January 6, 2007

What is Epistemology?

Epistemology is a form of philosphy that revolves around the nature of all reality.

Distinguishing Between the Ionian & Pluralist Traditions

By Chad Stroh

Distinguishing Between the Ionian & Pluralist Traditions.

What do they have in common?

-The Ionians identify reality with sensiblity (touch, hearing, smell)(hot, cold, dry)
-The Italians believed that everything is essentialy number.
-Itlaians also believed reality doesn't exist with the sensible world
-The Pluralist identify with plurality
-They all have balance, structure and order in common. They also have unity in common.

Evolution of Thoughts

By Chad Stroh

I don't believe in evolution of thoughts. Our thoughts are limiting themselves. Creativity was much more prevalant a thousand years ago than it it today. True progression takes creativity, not organization. Love and creativity will cure diseases, not an organized society.

External vs. Internal Things

By Chad Stroh

The world focuses on external things. Things we can see. This is a problem because externally we are all different. We must focus internally. Internall we are all the same.

Organization & Creativity

By Chad Stroh

An organized government pushes away creativity. Many people think that an optimized government is one based on organization. In this ideology, organization means progress. Creativity is a pre-requiste to progress. Organization limits creativity. This on of the greatest struggles of mankind. The more rules we have, the less we can do. The less we can do, the less we can think. The less we think, the less we are creative.

Leonardo Da Vinci

By Chad Stroh

Leonardo Da Vinci stepped across the boundaries that many people are afraid to cross. He spent hours upon hours fine tuning his skills and trying to understand the world. By the end of his life, he was considered a professional architect, anatomist, sculptor, engineer, inventor, mathematician, musician and painter.

No one knows for sure what sparked his immense curiousity in the world. one major factor is his apprenticship to Andrea del Verrocchio. Verrocchio stressed the importance of learning anatomy. Da Vinci was intrigued and studied many aspects of the human body. Many times he dissected dead human and animal bodies. He self taught himself incredible things like how the heart works.

Much like human anatomy, he was interested in machinary. He understood many dynamics of engineering and architecture. He desined buildings and sketched inventions. His ideas included an early helicopter and caluclator. He also self taught himself about plate tectonics and solar power.

As his sketches improved he shifted his interests to painting. He painted some of the most influential paintings known to date. This paintings include the Mona Lisa and the Last Supper. All of his paintings have incredible detail and outstanding realism.

Leonardo Da Vinci is considered on of the most important people in human history. Today he still influences culture, media, politics, education and art.

What is Happening in Darfur?

By Chad Stroh

A military group in Darfur named Janjaweed has been committing acts of genocide against peoples in Sudan, mainly people who are not from the Baggara tribes. The Janjaweed are rooted to the Baggara tribes. Many people believe that the Sudanese government give support to the janjaweed. Those same people believe that the Sudan government supplied Janjanweed tribe members with money, guns and troops. The main ethnicities being targeted by the Janjaweed are the Massaleit, Zaghawa and the Fur. The complications between the government of Sudan and it's people have been going on for many years. Many people think that forms of Genocide begin happening in 2003. The conflicts escalated when a group named the Darfur Liberation Front took credit for attack on a city filled with Janjaweed tribe members. The Janjaweed force has been increasing as they gain access to weapons and money. An estimated 400,000 people have been killed in the conflict. Gloablization is also contributing to Janjaweed rebel violence. Major countries are trying to find solutions by working through the United Nations.

Every Idealistic Person

By Chad Stroh

Every idealistic person involved in Colonization believes that human being must progress. We must make technology thrive, so we can explore our cosmos and space. We must make life as conveniant as possible. Economics tells us that every human being is self-interested. Most of the time, every human is out there for themselves. It is human nature.

The Great Thing About Time

By Chad Stroh

The great thing about time is that it allows us to grow. Time allows things to change and for people to forgive learn and grow.

Love and Relationships

By Chad Stroh

Many would agree that love is the main ingrediant in a happy relationship. Love and relationships are two of the most complicated things in the world. I don't think human beings can function in their everyday life with having the emotional comforts of love. Love first begins by meeting someone whose qualities you enjoy. Many people like to call this "falling in love".

Many people believe in love at first sight, but I don't know if can truly love someone until you know all the bad things about them. If you do this, then you begin to feel true love. You love them who they really are. If you can still love them after sixty years, than you have found true love. It is possible. There are many couples that have lasted that long. Many researchers have found out that people who are in a loving relationship live longer than those who are single. In today's culture many couples fail to be committed, respectful and to communicate.

Committment takes practice. The relationships that last the longest are the ones where each person is committed. Committment may mean talking n the phone everyday when one person is traveling. It may mean saying "I love you," a few times a day. A relationship is not only a lifestyle choice. It is a choice of self-control, growth and learning.

Communication is also very important. How can you love someone without knowing anything about them. Love is essential to a healthy and happy life. Learning to love is learning to live.

Geography & Globalization

By Chad Stroh

Geography is far more than just physical features. Geography has to do with things like settlement, culture, politics, economy and social groups. Just as important as geography is globalization. Globablization is a very controverisal thing. Many people feel that Globalization will make the world better and other people feel it will make the world worse off. The most likely case, is it will cause both. The collision of culture and business is already starting to show in our world. You can see McDonalds in practically every county in the world. English is becoming the main language in many countries other than America. You might call Americanization, but you can see the impact that other countries are having on America. Usually you can see it in the food industry, but you see it more and more in the technology industry. Foreign imports are becoming a major factor in America's economy. Outside of business, many people are feeling the effects of Globalizaton on a personal level. Many ethnic groups are trying to find their identity in a globalizing world. Many people think that global terrorism is a major side effect of globablization.

Does Iverson's Blue Jersey Fit

By Chad Stroh

Since Iverson had been in Denver, I haven't seen anything special. He scored 16 points against the Lakers the other night and had a fued with Kobe Bryant. He came to Denver averaging 28 points a game. No matter how much I like that Iverson is playing for my team, I can't stop picturing Larry Brown smiling once he knew that Iverson was of the Sixers. This guy is an amazing basketball player, I just hope he can use his talent as a team player.

Man Set Himself On Fire in Santiago, Chile

By Chad Stroh

I just don't understand why people would set themselves on fire for something political. Anything the government does is not as crazy as setting yourself on fire. Thursday night, a crazy guy lit himself on fire outside of the presidential palace in Chile protesting housing debt. Why would he make himself suffer for something like that. Most likely nothing will change, he will have severe burns and the whole world will think he is an idiot. I watched the video and it made me really think he was an idiot. He was backing away from the cops and then started pouring fuel all over himself. He then ran in a circle from the cops and jumped a pond in front of La Moneda Palace. After that, the Santiago police arrested him.

The Real Michael Jordan

My best friend's dad's friend (lol) is one of Michael Jordan's friends. He was telling us about how Michael Jordan is always flirting with women. Since his recent divorce I am starting to wonder how great of a person Michael Jordan is. There is no doubt that he is one of the greatest basketball players to ever play the game, but you have to have ethics in the world off the basketball court.

Grey's Anatomy

My girlfriend has always been telling me how great this show is. I thought it was like ER, which I kind of liked. Well my girlfriend and I started watching the Grey's Anatomy season 2 DVD and I love it. It is one of the best shows I have ever seen. My mom was a nurse, so I understand some of the medical jargon in it too. We watched 8 episodes in a row and I seriously wanted to watch more. I love all the characters and the plots. Any show that is based in a hospital usually comes up with creative ideas for scenes with patients. The crazy patients and the love triangles pulled me in. It's great. I will most likely be writing more about Grey's Anatomy.

Lost Dog Finally Comes Home

By Chad Stroh

A Colorado dog that has been lost for seven months was found in Knoxville, Tennessee. The dog's name is daisy and she just go a plane ticket back to Colorado. The woman who found the dog was named Tracie Crass. She found him wandering the streets on Christmas night. She called the number that was on Daisy's rabies tag and Daisy's vet answered. The veterinarian called the owner who lives in Aurora, Colorado. Last april Daisy dug a whole under the fence and ran away. Now daisy is has become a wonderful Christmas present for the family that lost her.

Too Much of a White Christmas

by Chad Stroh

You probably heard about the huge snowstorms that have been hitting Colorado lately. I know about them because I live in Colorado. I love spending time with my family, but I have spent two weeks straight with them and I am almost about to lose my mind. I haven't been outdoors in awhile either. Snowstorms are becoming a trend in Colorado. I went to college in Hawaii and now I am sitting and staring out at the Ice Age. Winter has always been the season that I have had to deal with. I guess it makes spring and summer that much better. I asked my mom if she would rather live in a really really hot place or a really really cold place and she said cold. I guess I see can kind of see her point, but I liked Hawaii because weather never got in the way of anything. Here I can't go see my girlfriend. I can't drive to the mall. I can't go the grocery store. I just looked out the window again. Brrrrrr. Maybe I will go build a snow fort.

Paid Grandpa a Visit

By Chad Stroh

Yesterday I went to go see my grandpa in his temporary rehab home. He recently fell and broke his left elbow and his left leg. He hasn't been able to walk for a couple months and that's why he is in rehab. He was really antzy when I got there. He was ready to go back to his home and I don't blame him. He told me about the Alzheimers patients and how they sitting in the dining area motionless. The nurses try to feed them, but they usualy refuse to eat the food.I think my grandpa realized that his broken bones don't compare to a broken mind. My grandpa is strong man. He has been smoking since he was thirteen. It was popular back then, so I don't blame him. He is now 76 and was forced to quit smoking because of his rehab. This is another reason why I think he was antzy. All in all we had a good talk about stuff and going to the nursing home always seems to open my eyes to a lot of realities.

Life is Like a Suitcase

By Chad Stroh

When I was traveling back from Hawaii the other day, I thought of an awesome idea. I thought of this because I brought way too much stuff in my suitcase and needed to fit Christmas presents there. Of course I tossed an old pair of my favorite basketball shoes. A suitcase only has a limited amount of room. So does life though. Room in life is time. We only have a limited amount of time on this earth. So here is the analogy:

Life is like a suitcase, you can only bring the things you really need.

By Chad Stroh

Fidel Castro's health has caused him more trouble. Castro has decided to bring in a famous Spanish surgeon to watch over his health. The surgeon's name is Jose Luis Garcia Sabrido. He arrived in Cuba by chartered flight on Thursday. Fidel Castro has already had a major surgery since his health began declining. He had intenstinal bleeding July of this year and had emergency surgery to treat it. Along with Garcia Sabrido, medical equipment is being sent to Cuba for Castro's aid. High ranking officials close to Castro, say he is not dying and that his health is improving even though he has nearly cut off his public appearances. His health has been making people question whether or not he will be governing Cuba for much longer.

Watch Out Illinois, The Armadillos Are Coming

By Chad Stroh

The Texas critters have been making their way up to Illinois. In Jackson County, 13 armadillos have been spotted. No one is sure why the armadillos are going up north. The farthest they have seen an armadillo go is Nebraska. People who have been observing the armadillo migration think they are traveling north because of the midwest region's favorable climate and it's sparse predators. People are really not sure how they are migrating at this point. They have large obstacles like the Mississippi River to overcome, if they are traveling by foot. During the Great Depression armadillos were known as "Hoover Hogs" because people would eat them instead of "chicken in every pot" that Herbert Hoover promised the American people. The interesting travels of the Armadillo are sparking interest in many people who are not familiar with the animal.

Zoo Trainer Mauled By Tiger

By Chad Stroh

A San Francisco Zoo keeper got the surprise of her life Friday. She was attacked by a Siberian Tiger that weighed about 350 pounds. The vicious attack may result in the loss of her arm. The zoo keeper was taken immediatly to have surgery on her injured arm. There were approximately 50 peopled that witnessed the violent attack. The tiger, Tatiana, reached through her bars and grabbed the unsuspecting Zoo keeper's arm. She was an experianced Zoo keeper and the attack was surprising. She has been working at the zoo since 1997. She was attempting to feed the tiger publicly through a small slot in which she was placing horse meat. It is the first serious animal attack at the San Francisco Zoo.

Taliban Commander Killed In Airstrike

A member of the Taliban who was very close in relation to Osama bin Laden was killed Tuesday in an airstrike. Mullah Akhtar Mohammad Osmani was killed in Pakistan. He was traveling in a vehicle near the city of Helmand. Two lower level terrorists were also killed. He was considered one of the top Taliban leaders of Omar. He had many roles in kidnappings, suicide attacks and roadside bombings. He primarily focused his efforts in Southern Afghanistan. This will be a major step in the war on terror. During June, a hidden Osmani in a black turban told a Pakistani news network that terrorist leaders Omar and Bin Laden are still alive and well.

The couple is Michael and Sharen Gravelle, both in their late 50. All of the children had special needs. The couple argued that they needed to quarantine the children to protect them from eachother. Michael and Sharen Gravelle are looking to up to five years in prison and fine of $10,000. The Ohio Department of Job and Family Services reformed it's adoption guidelines.

Shuttle Discovery Runs Into Bad Weather

By Chad Stroh

The Space Shuttle Discovery is expected to return sometime Friday. Bad weather has been causing trouble for NASA and Discovery. The shuttle has an option to land at three locations. The Kennedy Space Center in Florida, The Edwards Air Force Base in California and The White Sands Space Harbor in New Mexico. Clouds and Rain in Florida made NASA find other options. Trade winds at Edwards Air Force Base forced NASA to look into the option of White Sands. People worry that White Sands may be too outdated for a Shuttle Landing. It is generally used for practice landings. If the shuttle lands in at Edwards, it will take up to two weeks to get the shuttle back to Florida for preparation of it's next flight. It would take about two weeks from New Mexico. NASA announced that Discovery is safe to return Thursday afternoon.

Discovery Of a New Dinosaur

By Chad Stroh

In Europe, fossils have been extracted of a new dinosaur. The fossils were found in Spain. The new dinosaur named the sauro pod or Turiasaurus riodevenisis. The name Turiasaurus riodevenisis rooted because the dinosaur lived in an area named Teruel, which is now modern day Spain. The dinosaur lived in the late Jurassic period about 150 million years ago. The dinosaur was very large compared to other dinosaurs found in this area. The sauro pod is estimated to weigh as heavy as 48 tons. The bones were found by the Joint Paleontology Foundation Teruel-Dinopolis. The team was led by Rafael Royo-Torres.

Woman Puts Baby Through X-Ray At Airport

By Chad Stroh

A strange story comes from the Los Angeles International Airport. A security person noticed the shape of a baby in a piece of carry-on luggage. They quickly pulled out the baby. The baby was taken to a nearby hospital, where he doctors checked for radiation. The woman was determined to be an inexperianced traveler and she didn't know the rules of the airport.

Donald Trump vs. Rosie O'Donnell

By Chad Stroh

A fued is boiling between Donald Trump and Rosie O'Donnell. The television stars have let their opinionated viewpoints shine through. It all started when Rosie was discussing Trump's controversial decision to keep Miss USA Tara Conner and to not fire her for underage drinking. In her tyrade, Rosie insisted Trump is a "snake-oil salesman," while making fun of his hair.

"Left the first wife, had an affair, left the second wife, had an affair. Had kids both times, but he's the moral compass for 20-year-olds in America," O'Donnell said."This is not a self-made man," O'Donnell continued. "I just think he's a hot bag of wind, frankly, with bad hair."

Trump has been firing back at her and making threats to sue her. "You can't make false statements," Trump said. He went on to say "Rosie will rue the words she said. I'll most likely sue her for making those false statements—and it'll be fun. Rosie's a loser. A real loser. I look forward to taking lots of money from my nice fat little Rosie."

As the fued continues through interviews more attacks are happening. Donald was interviews for the Insider Wednesday and said "Rosie O'Donnell is disgusting, both inside and out," he said. "You take a look at her, she's a slob. She talks like a truck driver."

Many people are wondering if some of this is just a publicity stunt with the upcoming Apprentice. Since the brawl, the View's ratings have shot up by %30. Whatever the case may be, it is certainly interesting and sometimes comical televison.

Colorado Blizzard

By Chad Stroh

The Colorado area has been experiencing a severe blizzard since Tuesday, December 20th. The airport has been closed and all flights are canceled. The closing of the Denver International Airport will effect millions of travelers worldwide traveling for the holidays. Many areas in Denver are experienced up to 2 feet of snow and up to 30 inches in the mountains. Close to 5,000 people were stranded at the Denver International Airport. Up to 1000 flights were canceled Wednesday and Thursday. The runways are expected to open back up sometime friday afternoon. Friday night might not be the end of the snow for Colorado. The National Weather Service is warning for perhaps another storm this Friday and Saturday. The state has come to a complete halt while most roads are too snowy to drive on. Nebraska and Kansas are also getting some of the huge blizzard. Colorado Governor Bill Owens issued and declared a state of emergency and the National Guard has working on the roadways and has been delivering food, bottled water and baby items to the Denver International Airport. Many people say this is the most powerful storm in Colorado since the 2003 blizzard, which piled up to 11 feet of snow in some areas of Colorado. Many people were wishing for a white Christmas, but at what cost! Colorado is not new to large snow storms. Colorado is known for it's strange weather. Usually after the state has a large snow storm, the next day is usually sunny! The storm might be surprising for people who have never been to Colorado, but not for it's residents.

Allen Iverson Comes To Denver

Chad Stroh

It's official. Allen Iverson is coming to the Denver Nuggets. By adding Iverson to the team, the Nuggets will have one of the best offenses in the league. The Nuggets have already been in the news latley for the fist fight that happened in New York. That fight ended in the suspension of several Nuggets including Carmelo Anthony. It will be interesting to see the chemistry between Iverson and the team. Before the recent suspension, the Nuggets were on a roll and Anthony was the lead scorer in the league. Iverson has high hopes of going to a championship team and the Nuggets might very well be that team. A large blizzard in Colorado is making it difficult for Iverson to come to Colorado, but as soon as he gets there, the Nuggets will begin discussing Iverson and where he will fit in. Along with Iverson, the Nuggets recieved Ivan McFarlin, a 6-8 forward. The Nuggets lost Andre Miller and Joe Smith from the team. The day that Iverson was traded to the Nuggets will be one of the most important days in the history of the Denver Nuggets organization. The only problem is that traded players must arrive at their new teams within 48 hours and the airlines are canceling flights due to a large snow storm in Colorado. Iverson is expected to make practice on Thursday and debut against the Sacramento Kings Friday.

Celebrating Christmas

By Chad Stroh

Christmas has always been my favorite holiday. It is almost like the whole world changes during month of December. Everyewhere you go, you see Santa Claus, candy canes and snowmen. It makes people selfless and really think about family and friends. It makes us reflect on Jesus Christ's life and his miraculous birth. Christmas makes adults feel like kids again. I always like to watch as many Christmas movies as I can before the New Year. I listen to the radio station that plays Christmas music round the clock until the New Year. For me, Christmas has always been the high point of the holiday season. The suburbs are lined with flashing lights and you can see Christmas trees in all the windows. I remember when I was little, we had a calendar where you had to move a small nut cracker from day to day as Christmas approached. I love wrapping Christmas presents and buying Christmas cards. Deep down inside all of us, we all want to be selfless and give to others. Christmas gives us the chance to do that. I hope that nothing ever kills the spirit of of Christmas. I hope that every one has a Merry Christmas and a wonderful New Year.

Everclear On The O’Reilly Factor

After watching the interview of Art Alexakis, the lead singer of Everclear, on the O’Reilly Factor, I was very disappointed. I have always enjoyed listening to Everclear and have always liked their music. O’Reilly confronted Alexakis about one of their new music videos, where Jesus is clearly portrayed in ways that are obviously meant to offend millions of people. Alexakis had no clear answers to O’Reilly’s questions and he came off very arrogant and un-educated. Like Madonna and her mock crucifixions on stage, Everclear let their fame get the best of them. Fame does not mean you understand the truth of religion. Madonna and Everclear both assume they know what Christianity is. The same religion that has brought billions of people throughout history to their knees. The same religion that has caused wars and bloodshed. Both Madonna and Everclear have used Jesus as a publicity stunt. They may have fooled some people, but have offended millions. You can watch the clip of Art Alexakis on the O’Reilly Factor here:

Make Music In Your Heart

By Chad Stroh

I was weary to go to an orchestra concert one night. My friends bought me a ticket a week before and the night had come. It was not that I did not like orchestra concerts, I just felt like had some better things to do. I paid five dollars for the ticket and thought I paid too much. When I got there the auditorium was filled. The audience was buzzing and I began to buzz. The stage was set up beautifully. Fake stars were hanging from the ceiling and would shine as they turned in random spinning motions. The choir was lit up with blue lights that looked like the reflection of the ocean on an aquarium wall. The director came out and introduced the night and the show began. Every song struck a chord. They would trigger an emotion deep down inside of me or make me think new thoughts. What is it about music that delights the soul. Music is freedom of the mind. Throughout the day, the mind is constantly working out daily problems and wearing itself out. Our comfort in the world is lightened by the sound of beautiful music. Music introduces variety to our hectic days. It inspires us and makes our thoughts flow. Music releases the mind and allows it to be completely immersed in creative and chaotic thought. It aligns our emotions through beats. It changes the way we think through lyrics. Singing fills the heart with passion and allows us to express our deepest emotions. It does not matter if your voice is good or bad, singing brings harmony to the heart. My hope is that the world may embrace music and allow it to reach it's fullest potential. Keep it in schools. Find music in your own life. Music helps to fulfill the many backgrounds of our lives. As human beings, lets sing. Lets sing for God, peace, joy and meaning. Sing alone. Rejoice and sing. Lets make music in our hearts.

Tips On Time Management

By Chad Stroh

Time management is one of the hardest things to master. For some people it comes easy and for others it can be very difficult. It all matters on how motivated you are to get things done. The first step you need to take in having effective time management is setting your priorities straight. Once you know what needs to be done and how much time you have to do it, it will make the process easier. Most people know what needs to be done, but the problem comes when you need to turn your thoughts into actions. Thier are many factors that go into whether or not your thoughts will be turned into actions. It's all about economics. If I do this, will my future become easier or harder. Too many people live in the moment, thinking that some things can wait. Procrastinating usually stems from this ideology. Sometimes it is just plain laziness.

Sometimes people need tools to help them manage time. Ask yourself what your tools are? Your tool may be an organizer, PDA, laptop, notebook or it may even be writing things down on your hand. Once you know what works best for you, use it! By not doing things throughout your day, you are essentially not living your life. Set goals and use your time managment skills to achieve those goals. By doing this you can achieve things you want to do with your life and you will find the life is not as hard as it may seem!

My Respect For Sports

By Chad Stroh

As I just finished intramural basketball, I am reflecting on why I love being on a team and how great team sports are for our culture. I was talking to some people from South Korea about the differences between high schools and universities in America compared to those in South Korea. They told me the almost all of the High Schools and Universities don't have school sports or intramurals. They told me that the focus was very much on education. I disagree with this ideology very much. Some of the most educational times in my life have been from being on several different teams. I have grown friendships and broke the boundaries of culture. I have met people that I probably would have never talked to, simply because we share a common bond for the love of a sport. That is a life lesson that can't be taught in schools. This unorganized intramurals team I have been on in the last two weeks has been one of the best teams I have ever been on. The team was called "Individuals" because it was people who signed up in groups of one or two people, but the team was anything but individuals. We made it to the championship game and lost. As I continue to play sports I learn lessons about life, friendship and myself. This is a lot like life. It doesnt matter where you end up, just how you got there.

A Religion Without Tolerance is No Religion at All

By Chad Stroh

What do you think about when you hear the word terrorist? A lot of people probably think of the middle east and the Muslim religion. It's incredible how a few fundamentalists and radicals can make a whole religion look bad in the eyes of people across the world. I know this is true because of my own thoughts and stereo types. I started to think differently when I heard a story about a Sikh man who was shot and killed in a subway after9/11. He was killed because he was wearing a turban on his head.Turbans are worn primarily by Sikhs who are neither Muslim or Arab and have nothing to do with Muslim Fundamentalism. If the man who shot him would have studied geography a bit more, he wouldn't of killed an innocent man. Today more than ever, we need to sit down and study the physchology of people today. The world is in a tender moment. Every country is power hungry based on fear of larger countries. North Korea is testing Nuclear weapons, even though majority of North Korean people just want to live safe. The world becomes like this when two or three major leaders change the role of their country in the world. South Korean farmers are burning American Flags because of our trade policies. Because of a bad trade policy, thousands of South Korean people automatically hate me because I am American. The world is a mine field and we learned that on september 11th. Everyone obviously knows that war is a bad thing, but I think it is necessary to fight terrorism. Many Muslim Fundamentalist's literally devote their whole life to bring down western society. They have taken the Muslim religion and reconfigured it without tolerance. They have minimilized it to a very close minded ethnic religion. I believe that any religion that is not open to every person of any race is not a religion of all. This usually happens when people fail to understand their own personal beliefs when they are trying to find meaning in the world. This is the same for people. Any person who is not open minded to the world and other people has trapped themselves within their own body. Muslim Fundamentalists have trapped themselves in their own religion. I think to understand Muslim terrorism, we must understand that even though Muslim Fundamentalist have their roots in the Muslim religion, millions of Muslims do not think like that. Christianity is popular because it is a universal religion that accepts everyone, but not everyone thinks this way. The Ku Klux Klan are radical Christians who find text in the Bible and blow them out of proportion and use it to hate people that are not caucasian. I am a Christian caucasian and I do not think that way. My advice to people learning religion is to first read texts like the Quran and the Bible to fully understand it before practicing it. You will find that almost all religions are based on tolerance and love, no matter how the text is misunderstood.

The Rise and Fall of Technology

By Chad Stroh

Being born at the beginning of the information age I've seen many things come and go. I've seen the cassette tape fade away along with VHS. I have seen the short life of the CD, which is being lost in a world of MP3. I have seen video stores completely change their whole invetory to DVD. Technology and information are allowing new mediums of information. A song was played on a cassette and now it is played on an Ipod. It is important to remember that nothing can ever replace a live performance. There is something appealing about witnessing live emotion. The question I wonder is if technology causes us to lose true emotion. I have always liked writing letters and postcards to people. Something about writing allows you to express your thoughts and emotions in an organized way. A call on the phone has those time where both people are not talking about anything. As technology improves, are we really improving as human beings? Well that depends on how you view life. Many people think that everything should be quick and easy. Shoot and fire. If you are like this, than you probably find technology appealing. I am not one of these people. I love listening to the radio and not knowing what the next song is. I think that there is a fascination with technology and so called "progression", but I feel in the next two hundred years we might see a sort of "resurrection" of human emotion. Robots are already taking over millions of workers jobs. I will leave my argument with this point. I read an article about how computers can play a perfect game of chess. How do you define a perfect game of chess though? I think it is one where both opponents are equal, not when one side has all the right moves. Sometime we have to redefine perfection. That same article said a computer cannot walk across a room full people because it can predict random human movement. A three year old girl can walk across a room.

Wrapping Up In Hawaii

I want to start off this blog by giving you some information about my situation. I am finishing out my first semester at the University of Hawaii At Hilo. Being here in Hawaii has taught me many things about life. One of the most important things I learned from being here was the importance of tolerance. I never realized that Hawaii is going through major globalization and hundreds of cultures, religions and ideologies are clashing. I came to Hawaii with stereotypes. I did not get lei'd when I got off the plane. I realized that Hawaii is struggling to find its identity. I read an article recently written by a Hawaiin nationalist who feels that tourism propaganda down plays actual Hawaiian culture. An example of this are postcars with skinny dark skinned Hawaiian women. In reality, traditional Hawaiian culture view thin women as unhealthy. After learning more and more about Hawaiian culture, I realized how brain washed I was by the tourism industry. But my experiance here was much more than that realization. I found true friendship and a connection to the Eastern part of the world. Hawaii's unique location in the middle of the Pacific allows Westerners and Easterners to meet, not to mention Hawaii's amazing physical landscape. I was the first to arrive at my apartment at the beginning of the semester. The airline had lost my luggage and I truly never felt more excited or scared in my life. As my roommates arrived, I realized for the first time in my life I would be a minority. One of my roommates was Korean, one was Japanese from Japan and one was Japanese from the Island of Maui. Here are some portions of an essay I wrote to help you understand why the mix of roommates is so interesting:

"As Hawaii undergoes globalization, many people are experiencing the good and bad outcomes of culture clashing. In the past 150 years settlers from Asia, Europe and the United States have found their way to Hawaii. Many things have resulted in the mixture of cultures in Hawaii. A blend of all these languages lead to Pidgin English, a widely used language developed when plantation workers came to Hawaii. Pidgin formed when English vocabulary was blended with Melanesian grammar. Tourism also had a major impact on Hawaii. Traditional Hawaiian workers and fishermen found careers in the tourism industry, working at hotels and golf courses. A major reason for European colonialism was the fact that King Kamehameha steadily encouraged Christian missionaries, traders and whalers from Europe to come to Hawaii in the mid-nineteenth century. A traditional Hawaiian word that is still prominent today for the light skinned Europeans and Americans is haole. Europeans and American settlers saw the opportunities that Hawaii had to offer. A booming sugarcane industry resulted from the creation of plantations. The import and export of sugarcane brought many new people to see amazing landscape of Hawaii. After the boom cooled down, the sugarcane industry experienced major labor shortages. Japanese, Portuguese and Chinese workers were imported to Hawaii. By the early 1900s, thousands of these workers called Hawaii home. In 1898, Hawaii had one it’s most defining moments in history when it was annexed by the United States. Modern Hawaiian nationalists are prompting for Hawaii to be its own nation. The Hawaiian census in the early 1900s showed that %55 of Hawaii’s population was Asian, % 20 percent were native Hawaiian and %15 percent were European. This major culture change has brought both good and bad outcomes to modern day Hawaii.
Today many native Hawaiians are finding ways to fight cultural globalization. Many native Hawaiians are encouraging indigenous peoples to create movements that support returning the islands to Polynesian control. This is a major attempt to preserve Hawaiian culture and heritage. This ideology has created separation among cultures and races. Two outcomes of this ideology are lost identities among non native Hawaiians and racist attitudes among many indigenous Hawaiian nationalists. Many influential indigenous peoples of Hawaii are attempting to define Hawaiian’s political and cultural landscape. Sovereignty is a major issue in Hawaii today among many people, both native and non native. The question of also defining who is native and who isn’t is also a major issue. Many Japanese, Portuguese and Chinese people feel they are native because their ancestors lived here in past generations. While many indigenous Hawaiian people feel different. Many Hawaiian nationalists feel that Hawaiian literature and orature is being replaced by literature and orature brought from tourism and globalization. A Culture shift in Hawaii due to tourism is a difficult concept for many native and non-native Hawaiian people to relate to because tourism is Hawaii’s leading economic income producer. Tourism seems to glorify certain aspects of Hawaiian culture and adapt it to pop-culture. This happens when the travel industry produces market goods that falsify Hawaiian culture. An example of this is postcards that show thin Hawaiian women, when in reality traditional Hawaiian culture views thin women as unhealthy. There are also many good things resulting from globalization. Stereotypes about Hawaii are being broken by travelers who come to the islands. Many people are beginning to find the distinction of Hawaii’s exhibited culture and its present culture. For many people this isn’t an easy thing to do. Growth, cultural change and tradition seem to conflict during Hawaii’s globalization. People are asking themselves whether or not diversity and tradition is worth the price of oppression and racism. Hawaii’s diversity, both physically and culturally are having an impact all over the world.
Hawaii’s beautiful landscape brings millions of visitors to the state of Hawaii each year. The Hawaii Tourism Authority says that approximately, 7.5 million people visited Hawaii in 2005. The average number of visitors in a day according to census was 185,445 in 2005. Visitor expenditures reached $11.9 billion dollars. The interconnections of people from all over the world are bringing vast changes to all of Hawaii. You may see Japanese architecture or you may see authentic Korean Gardens. As visitors come to Hawaii they are learning what Hawaii is based on experience and not tourist propaganda. Mark Twain’s Letters from the Sandwich Islands published in 1866 was used as a basis for many Westerners to define their image of what Hawaii is. The image and stereotypes of Hawaii created by tourist literature and the travel industry is gradually changing as travelers who visit Hawaii return home and explain their experience. Their stories most likely consist of real Hawaiian culture, maybe even racism and oppression, rather than hula dancers and lei’s.
The future of Hawaii’s political and cultural landscape is uncertain, but what is certain is that Hawaii will undergo globalization. According to census, the total population of the world will increase 4 billion people in the next 50 years. Many of these people will find their way to Hawaii sometime during their life. Globalization is changing the need for political boundaries throughout the world. Technology is dramatically changing the travel industry. Globalization is making people realize that Hawaii can be inhibited by both native and non-native people and still preserve its traditional culture through practice. Questions of identity are being fizzled out by the education system mixing cultures in the classroom. Hawaii’s major universities are encouraging programs like the National Student Exchange to bring students to Hawaii. Racism in Hawaii is a real epidemic but it is slowly fading away behind the sheets of true Hawaiian culture based on love and knowledge. In short Hawaii is learning about the world and the world is learning about Hawaii."
